01
Ending Violence Against Women in Politics
A creative project for the UN Women and European Union together with Reps Theatre for the UN Women for their ‘16days of activism against gender-based violence’ call to action. The project was developed in two sections: as a small-scale theatre project and a national tour.
The work involved the development of two original scripts and the facilitation of a political documentary featuring female political activists sharing their GBV experiences in politics. It was then programmed to national level and brought together two touring theatre groups who performed in 12 locations within six of the country’s provinces. The performances addressed GBV in electoral processes and helped create discourse on the topic. It raised awareness on various other issues women are facing within the communities and within positions of power. The first part of the program lasted for 3 months while the second part ran over six months project, and involved the development of radio dramas which were aired in the weeks leading to the General elections and play recordings which were streamed online.
The project was a great success and the workshops we facilitated concurrently with the Victim Friendly Unit and the Zimbabwe Gender Society organizations; all had a positive turnout.
